Is public transport included in the Porto Card?
The Porto Card covers free museum entry and discounts, but no transport tickets for the metro or buses. You buy public transport tickets (the Andante system) separately in Porto. They are available at the following locations:
- Andante shop at Porto Airport (daily 08:00-18:30)
- Andante shop at Metro Trindade (Mon-Fri 09:00-18:00, Sat 09:00-13:00)
- Ticket desk at São Bento railway station (opening hours may vary)
Porto's public transport network
Porto has an extensive network of metro, city buses and suburban trains. With an Andante ticket you can use:
- Metro: 6 lines across the city, including Line E to the airport.
- Buses (STCP): all city bus routes.
- Suburban trains (CP): commuter rail services across the greater Porto area.
Historic trams and the funiculars run on separate tickets. The Porto Card gives small discounts on some of these.
Using the system
- Buy a ticket: Get an Andante ticket at one of the ticket offices or machines listed above.
- Validate: Hold your ticket against the validator at every boarding, including when you change lines. A green signal confirms a valid tap.
- Inspections: If a ticket inspector checks your ticket, you must show a valid, validated ticket. Travelling without a valid validation can result in a fine.
Timetables and app
"Anda" app: The official public transport app offers journey planning and real-time departures. Free for Android and iOS.
Operating hours: Metro approximately 06:00-00:30, buses until around 01:00, with some night bus services after that.
Key lines for visitors
- Airport: Metro Line E runs from Porto Airport to the city centre in around 30 minutes.
- Sightseeing: The Ribeira district is within walking distance of Aliados and São Bento stations. Metro Line D crosses the Douro to Jardim do Morro, perfect for the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia.
- Beaches: Metro Line A takes you to the city beach at Matosinhos in about 30 minutes.
